About Venus

Venus CampbellBerrios serves as principal of Book of Venus Publishing, a multicultural speculative fiction publishing group she established in 2021 after transitioning from 25 years in foundation work. She has written professionally since 2006, authoring 12 publications and co-authoring additional books while advising newer writers. Venus holds a director at large position with the Romance Writers of America and serves as secretary of the board for its Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal chapter. She is also a member of the Authors Guild and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Her educational background includes studies at the University of the District of Columbia and Montgomery College. Venus has received the Golden Wizard Book Prize, Book Fest Award, and Kroger Award for her work. She attributes her success to her mother's early encouragement of writing, supportive teachers including Ms. Tucker and Mrs. Robinson, and flexibility from her previous role at the Open Society Foundations. Venus is currently working with her home-based municipality on events and focuses on addressing the challenge of connecting Black and POC speculative fiction authors with their audiences.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Venus

01What do you attribute your success to?

My mother allowed me to write at a young age and was a writer herself. Supportive teachers like Ms. Tucker and Mrs. Robinson encouraged me. My previous employer at Open Society Foundations provided flexibility to branch out.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Finding your audience is a real challenge, especially for Black and POC speculative fiction authors. It takes time, attention, and resources to connect stories with readers.
