About Veronica
Veronica Garrett is an Operations License Instructor, author, and poet with more than four decades of experience in the nuclear power industry. She began her career in 1982 after transitioning from construction work at a nuclear facility in Kansas and went on to build extensive expertise in nuclear operations, licensing, and workforce training. Garrett spent approximately 29 years with Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Company, followed by roles at H.P. Robinson, Point Beach, and South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Bay City, Texas. Her career has included serving as an operator, earning both her Reactor Operator and Senior Reactor Operator licenses, and serving as a Unit Supervisor for approximately four years.
As an experienced nuclear operations instructor, Garrett is committed to developing talent, strengthening technical knowledge, and promoting operational excellence throughout the industry. Her instructional experience includes classroom and simulator training, developing and revising lesson materials, and preparing plant operators to meet rigorous operational and procedural standards. She brings a collaborative leadership philosophy to her work, emphasizing teamwork, accountability, continuous learning, and adherence to established procedures. Her professional growth has been guided by persistence and clearly defined goals, while her transition into training also allowed her to step away from shift work and devote more time to her daughters as they grew up.
Beyond her career in nuclear operations, Garrett is an accomplished author and poet, using writing as a creative outlet and a means of expressing perspectives that complement her professional experiences. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to having clear goals, staying persistent, and being willing to adapt when opportunities or circumstances changed. Throughout my career, I set specific objectives for myself, including becoming a unit supervisor and earning my Senior Reactor Operator license, and I remained committed even when advancement took longer than expected. When the opportunity arose to transition from operations into training, I embraced the change, recognizing the value of stepping away from shift work while my daughters were growing up. Although my career ultimately took a different path than I originally envisioned, I learned that success is not always about following a predetermined plan; it is about accepting challenges, making the most of new opportunities, and continuing to grow. I also value writing as a way to express myself, expand my perspective, and develop skills that complement my professional experience.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have learned is that success does not always follow the path you originally envision, and that setbacks are not defeats. Throughout my career, I have learned to remain adaptable, recognize new opportunities, and make the most of the circumstances in front of me. There were roles and opportunities I had hoped to pursue, but when those paths did not materialize, I chose to embrace change and find meaningful ways to continue growing. I believe that when life gives you challenges, you have to find a way to “make lemonade” and turn those experiences into opportunities for growth. That mindset has helped me remain resilient, open to new possibilities, and committed to finding purpose in every chapter of my professional journey.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to be persistent, know what you want, and have the confidence to pursue it. In male-dominated fields, you may encounter people who question your abilities or suggest that certain opportunities are not appropriate for you. Do not allow those opinions to define your potential or limit your ambitions. Be willing to step forward, advocate for yourself, and remain determined even when you encounter resistance. Believe in your capabilities, stay focused on your goals, and do not be afraid to challenge expectations or take a seat at the table.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are perseverance, determination, adaptability, and family. Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of setting meaningful goals and continuing to pursue them, even when opportunities do not come as quickly or easily as expected. I believe in remaining committed to my goals while also being open to change and recognizing when a different path may offer new opportunities. At the same time, family is a fundamental priority in my life, and I value making decisions that allow me to be present for the people who matter most. These values have helped me navigate challenges with resilience, embrace new opportunities, and maintain a sense of purpose both professionally and personally.
