Her Story
About Veronica
I always loved helping people and working with the youth, and then I became passionate about it. I had no idea that I would even be in this position now. I ended up applying for the position, and getting it, and growing it, and learning. I've been in my position for about 8 years at this company, but I've been doing this for at least 15 years. My typical day involves greeting my team in the mornings and making sure everyone's good. I put out a lot of fires, so if something's going on in the building, I'm the go-to to fix things and make sure things are placed, like work orders, and making sure members get signed up for their appointments and memberships. I'm usually really busy until about noon, and then it slows down with typical emails and Teams chats and meetings. I went to school in education, so I have my associate's in education, and I use that with the youth activity city portion at my health club. I became a caregiver for my grandma and started helping her, and I got a little bit interested. Then I became a caregiver for my grandfather, and that kind of opened a whole new world. So I ended up getting certifications for being a caretaker, CPR certified, first aid certified. I ended up getting my Werq certification, so I started teaching classes for cardio drumming. Me being a caretaker kind of opened my eyes up in the health journey, and then it made me take better care of myself working in a health environment.

Ten minutes with Veronica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say just being very determined. I have this drive to succeed and motivation behind my life of just being so successful. That determination has really pushed me forward in everything I do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received was finding a passion that I love and turning it into a career. When you do that, it doesn't feel like a job. It actually feels like my day-to-day life, and I actually love it. Like, I love what I do now, and I took that advice and ran with it a long time ago.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say try everything that you're interested in to see what you like. It's never too late, or never too early to make a decision, but if you try everything, then you get an idea of what's your thing, like, what's your take on what you're going to do.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Healthcare is not always affordable for some of the people in our community, and sometimes we just don't have enough resources to help those people who want to do better. So sometimes that looks a little discouraging when someone cannot afford a membership, or when they can't get the care that they need, or don't have the transportation that they need. Our community really doesn't have the resources that we need in this area sometimes for some of our people and demographics.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being an honest woman and standing on my own beliefs are the values most important to me. Those two things kind of make me the woman that I am today.
