She advises young women entering the field to persist, educate themselves using free resources like YouTube, and views education and employee feedback as key opportunities amid challenges like organizational restructuring and resistance to change.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Veronica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to people in my life who have believed in me even when I did not believe in myself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The president told me: In 5 years, do you want to be the HR coordinator you are now, or do you want to be the HR coordinator with your degree or SHRM certification? It didn't take me but 2 years to decide to do it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. There's hope. It's hard. Also, educate yourself. Whatever you can do, there's free learning all over the place. You can even learn free from YouTube.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges are restructuring and realignment, especially with new leadership and employees resistant to change. The biggest opportunity is education - sitting with employees, having them interact, getting their feedback through activities like stop, start, continue.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Empathy is the main value I carry. Always do the right thing when no one's looking. I care so much about people, go above and beyond, whether it's cooking a warm meal or taking them to lunch. I want everyone to be successful.
