Her Story

About Veronica

I started in broadcast journalism after switching from a PR major when a journalism elective sparked my love for storytelling. Returning to my hometown of Bakersfield, I joined 23 ABC News KERO and have stayed there for 8 years, advancing to senior reporter. I anchor daily newscasts and report on key local issues, finding deep fulfillment in connecting with the community through my work.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the overwhelming support from mentors over the last 8 years at the same station. These mentors have always provided advice and support, and many have become my closest friends.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice is to take a deep breath and remember that everything will be okay. Having supportive people around you helps you get through mistakes that feel like the end of the world and keeps you going even when questioning if you should stay in the field.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Work hard and have fun. Find the little things to really enjoy, and appreciate the small-town stories just as much as the big breaking news.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is avoiding being overwhelmed and maintaining work-life balance for mental health, especially with heavy topics covered. The industry faces changes, uncertainty, social media, and AI impacts at the local level, but it offers the opportunity to deeply appreciate and connect with your hometown community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I pride myself on being a dedicated and hard worker who constantly goes above and beyond and cares deeply about the work. I also prioritize work-life balance, especially in the last two to three years, with support from family and loved ones.
