Veronica Vela - Olortegui
Veronica Vela is an Architect and Project Manager specializing in guiding project teams from concept to completion, from space planning and design to construction coordination. Known for her leadership, organization, and client-focused approach, she has successfully delivered complex, high-profile projects that balance design excellence with business goals.
As Design Manager at Swire Properties Inc., Veronica partners with the Design Director and Development team on The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami, managing large global consultant teams and overseeing coordination, budgets, and value engineering. She also collaborates with Sales, Marketing, and Operations to align design solutions with strategic objectives.
Beyond her role at Swire, Veronica is the Co-Founder of My Space Shades, a family business that blends design, craftsmanship, and exceptional service. Her previous experience includes leading commercial and hospitality projects at Dorsky Yue International, LA Design Inc., and VD Arquitectura.
Veronica holds a Professional Architect degree from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and a Specialization in Project Management from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. She is also an active Troop Leader with American Heritage Girls, reflecting her passion for mentorship and community.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to professional dedication, adaptability, and the unwavering support of my family. Over the past 15 years, I’ve built a career that began with my foundation as a licensed architect in Peru and evolved into design management and construction development in the U.S. Navigating a new country while raising two children has been both my greatest challenge and proudest achievement. I thrive on leading high-end developments that embody the “luxury experience,” and I’m currently guiding a transformative project that represents a new chapter in my professional journey. Collaborating with a world-class team continues to fuel my passion for design excellence, teamwork, and innovation. Beyond my corporate role, I co-run a custom window treatment business with my husband, a venture that blends creativity, craftsmanship, and partnership. This balance between entrepreneurship and large-scale design deepens my commitment to meaningful, well-crafted work in every setting.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To never stop believing in your own talent, even when someone else fails to recognize it.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To all the women out there: you truly can achieve anything you set your mind to even after becoming a mother. It’s not easy, but remember: A happy mom raises happy humans. Just aim to be your best version most days, and give yourself grace on the others.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Women in construction continue to face underrepresentation and the challenge of proving credibility in a traditionally male-dominated field. Balancing demanding projects with personal responsibilities can also be tough. Yet, the opportunities have never been greater, from leadership roles and innovation in design and sustainability to the growing recognition of the value women bring through collaboration, communication, and vision. The industry is evolving, and women are reshaping what leadership in construction looks like.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are family, creativity, and collaboration. I especially cherish spending quality time with my daughter, which brings balance and perspective to my professional pursuits. These values guide how I lead projects, work with teams, and approach challenges, ensuring that both my personal and professional life remain meaningful and fulfilling.
