Dr. Veronica Wilkerson Johnson is a dedicated educator, author, and entrepreneur whose work centers on inspiring multicultural youth and families to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics). As the owner and executive director of VWJ STEAM Ventures, LLC, she provides guidance, mentorship, and resources to help students from diverse, marginalized, and first-generation backgrounds thrive academically and professionally. Her book, A Sparkle in Their Eyes: Raising Talented, Diverse Students in STEAM Careers, offers practical strategies and inspiring stories to engage families and communities in supporting the next generation of STEAM professionals.

With a long-standing career in education and government, Dr. Johnson has served as an English professor at Lansing Community College since 2008 and has held leadership roles at the University of Michigan, including Director of the Lansing office for the Office of the Vice President for Government Relations. She also served as Chief Legislative Aide in the Michigan State Legislature and as an elected Precinct Delegate in Ingham County, Michigan, highlighting her commitment to civic engagement and public service.

Dr. Johnson’s professional journey combines scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. She earned a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Ferris State University, graduating with highest distinction. Passionate about empowering students through education and community engagement, she continues to mentor, write, and develop initiatives that open doors for young people to excel in STEAM fields while cultivating confidence, creativity, and a love of learning.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a lifelong passion for helping others, which began growing up in a medical household, and to my dedication to education, advocacy, and communication. Over the past 20 years, I’ve taught in higher education, authored my book A Sparkle in Their Eyes in 2023, and continuously worked to inspire and guide students and families in STEAM fields.

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to truly believe in yourself—if you believe, you can achieve it.

My advice to young women entering this field is simple: believe in yourself, work hard, and know that you can achieve anything.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are balance, passion, and dedication—I strive to bring the same focus to my career as I do to my love of golf and cooking.
