Her Story

About Veronica

Veronica YarboroughTrotman, who goes by Yvette, serves as a Program Coordinator with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where she has worked for 27 years. Her career in transportation began in the military as an equipment parts specialist with heavy equipment, followed by roles in a trucking company and travel center before joining the state in 1999. Today her focus is on over dimensional loads, helping obtain superloads permits to ensure safe travel on North Carolina roads, including navigating bridges and mountainous terrain in the western part of the state. She attributes her success to integrity and persistence in finding compromises rather than accepting no as final. Outside her professional role, she leads the Raleigh-Durham chapter of Black Girls 2 Bike, a national organization with over 105 chapters that works to get more women of color on bicycles. She brought the organization's national meetup to the Raleigh area in June after a competitive application process. She values complete honesty even when difficult and advises others to stand in their truth and own it. She notes ethics as a current challenge in her field due to the administration in place.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Veronica

01What do you attribute your success to?

Integrity and not willing to take no as a definite answer, trying to find a compromise in between that no and your choice or resolution to the situation.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The biggest thing is to stand in your truth, no matter what it is this day and age, and own it, whatever that may look like for you. Because you only get this life one time, so own your truth and honor it, just as it is.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Ethics is a big challenge because of the current administration. With the nonprofit, it is a lot of work but if you put in the work and effort and have a good team, you can accomplish anything.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being completely honest even when wrong, giving the truth no matter what it is without sugarcoating it.
