Her Story

About Vesta

I migrated to this country escaping domestic violence from an abusive husband, arriving with nothing. I worked as a nanny and housekeeper before entering nonprofits as a direct care support worker. After earning my bachelor's degree in my 50s, I became a manager for about 10 years, then pursued my master's to become a director. My drive comes from wanting better for my children after experiencing poverty.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to growing up in poverty and wanting to change that for myself and my children. I didn't want my children to experience the level of poverty that I experienced. My son is a tower operator for the MTA and my daughter works for the New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's satisfying. It's a great feeling when you help someone and they turn back and tell you thank you. You helped me well. You did a great job. It uplifts you, it empowers you to do more for others.
