About Veverly
Veverly Edwards serves as an Assistant Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis, where she has been teaching English, African American Literature, and creative writing since 2018. She is also the founder of Arts Cafe, a cultural arts nonprofit organization she established in 2017 to bring cultural arts programming and community engagement to South Memphis. Her professional background includes curriculum development, student advising, and evidence-based instructional strategies, along with experience in training and development and public speaking. Edwards is a patient safety advocate and member of the Patient Safety Action Network, and she volunteers with Arc Mid-South. She holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Memphis earned in 2020, an Education Specialist degree in Organizational Learning and Leadership and a Master's in Curriculum Development from the University of Idaho, both completed in 2010, and a certificate in African American Literature. 01What do you attribute your success to?
My mom, my upbringing, my faith in God, and my family supported me through the most horrific thing of almost losing a child.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't give up. Keep pushing forward. You might be closer than you think, like the swimmer who gave up right before the finish line.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It is a challenge but one worth fighting for. Be open to learn and receive directions. Listen and take what you can from advice.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges: financial aspects of nonprofit and timing while working full-time as professor. Opportunities: nonprofits are a great training ground for young people, especially college students through paid internships and summer camps.
