Ten minutes with Victoria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my support system. My parents have done so much for me, as has my boyfriend, and I am equally grateful for the people I work with who have supported and believed in me throughout my career. I would not be where I am today without their encouragement, confidence in me, and continued support. I also come from a family with several members who serve in law enforcement, including my sister, who is a sexual assault detective for Las Vegas.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Two of the most influential mentors in my career have been Nick White and my current boss, Randy Gilmer. Nick White played an important role early in my career by teaching me the litigation process in North Carolina and helping me build a strong foundation as an attorney, as well as continuing to actively encourage me in my career. Randy Gilmer continues to guide and support my professional development, helping me grow in my role and become a better attorney. Their mentorship has reinforced for me the importance of learning from experienced professionals and remaining open to guidance throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the legal profession is to take every opportunity to learn and grow. You do not have to limit yourself to opportunities that immediately interest you. If someone invites you to an event, training, or continuing legal education program, make the effort to attend, even when you are tired or have other work to complete. The work will always be there, but opportunities to learn may not always come around again.

My main focus has always been learning, and I do not believe anyone can ever learn enough. Being willing to step outside your comfort zone, listen to others, and continually develop your knowledge and skills can make a meaningful difference throughout your career.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I have encountered, particularly as a young woman in the legal profession, is being taken seriously. There have been countless situations in which opposing counsel, particularly an older male attorney with many years of experience, has assumed that I was a paralegal, that I did not understand the matter, or that my supervisor was on the way. Being underestimated can be a significant challenge.

At the same time, those experiences reinforce the importance of preparation, professionalism, and continuing to develop my knowledge and skills. The opportunity is to demonstrate through the quality of my work and advocacy that experience and expertise should be measured by preparation and ability rather than assumptions.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and work ethic are the most important values in both my personal and professional life. For me, honesty means being completely truthful while also understanding and respecting my boundaries. Work ethic means being willing to put in the effort necessary to complete the job properly, including staying up late when circumstances require it. I believe both integrity and a strong work ethic are essential to being someone others can trust and rely upon.
