Her Story

About Victoria

Victoria Gauzza is an independent journalist and writer based in Cornwall, New York. With two years of experience in the field, she focuses primarily on music journalism, conducting interviews with artists via video platforms, transcribing them, and crafting articles. She freelances for Petty Magazine, an indie publication, and maintains a Substack featuring personal essays and movie reviews. Gauzza earned a journalism degree with a concentration in literature, which supports her work reviewing books and media through an anthropological lens. Her professional journey includes a mentorship with Fabiola Jean of Propelled Media that led to an internship at the Haitian Times. In December, she received a citation from Councilwoman Rita Joseph recognizing her as an exemplary community member. Gauzza attributes her success to her support system and values strong time management, which she has cultivated through the use of to-do lists. She advises aspiring journalists, particularly young women, to persist through challenges and connect with others in the field.

Ten minutes with Victoria

01What do you attribute your success to?

My support system around me encourages me to keep pushing myself and believe in myself.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

As long as you are happy doing what you do, it really doesn't matter what others think of it. Do what you love, otherwise your life's just gonna be miserable.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't get discouraged. There are gonna be times where you'll want to give up, but you can't because as soon as you feel like you want to give up, that's how you know you're doing the most important work. Find other women specifically in the journalism field, because we need to stick together now more than ever.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Journalism is kind of dying which is scary, but there's a rise of independent journalists and online magazines. It's easier now more than ever to get involved in your community. Censorship by the government is killing us but we'll thrive and persist.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Time management is really important. I had to work at it as I grew into my career, and I've fallen in love with a to-do list.
