Her Story

About Victoria

Victoria King serves as Director of Nursing at Bishop State Community College in Theodore, Alabama. She began her nursing career after graduating with a BSN from Tuskegee University in 1992, starting as an operating room nurse at University of South Alabama Medical Center where she gained experience in cardiac, vascular, and neuro cases. After 17 years full-time and additional part-time in the OR, she pursued further education, earning an MSN in Nursing Education from the University of Mobile and later a DNP in Nursing Administration from Samford University. This advanced training enabled her transition into academia as faculty at Bishop State, where she now leads the nursing program. She remains involved in part-time OR work and is a member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, the Alabama Nurses Association, NLN, and OABN. King credits her parents, particularly her mother, for pushing her to pursue higher education, which opened professional doors, and she emphasizes continuous learning as key career advice. Outside work, she volunteers with the Bay Area Riding Club to educate the community about horses.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Victoria

01What do you attribute your success to?

My mom and my dad always instructed me that you need an education. Before my mom died, she pushed and pushed that I go back and get my master's degree. Without that, none of the doors that are open for me would have been open today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Education. Don't stop learning. Learn something new. Don't stay in one spot.
