Her Story

About Victoria

I have been in my profession for 25 years. My career path led me through a rigorous tenure process and ultimately to the rank of full professor. This journey has been a long-term, extensive commitment, starting with my PhD studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and continuing through years of working toward tenure and full professorship at San Diego State University. Since I have always loved my job and began the PhD program while raising two kids, balancing professional responsibilities with family meant every moment had to be carefully managed. To succeed, I needed to focus on research, teaching, and serving both the university and my profession. I enjoy conducting research and value the relationships I have built with my colleagues. What makes it all so rewarding is the lasting impact on my students. I still hear from students who took my classes 10 to 15 years ago. It is incredibly gratifying to realize that my words, spoken so long ago, are still remembered. Each semester, around a hundred students enter my classroom, and I do my best to share my knowledge with them. They are young and energetic, which motivates me to keep going semester after semester.

During my academic career, I have published more than 30 scholarly articles, contributed to and edited two scholarly books, and presented my ideas at over 45 national and international conferences.

I also hold visiting professor positions at UC San Diego, Renmin University, Beijing, l’Université d’Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France, EASCP-ECP, European School of Management, Paris, ESSEC Business School, Paris, Universitat Autonoma, Madrid, and University of Economics and Management, Vienna, among others.

Additionally, for many years, I served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Accounting and as an Associate Editor for both The International Journal of Economics and Business Research and the Journal of International Accounting, Auditing, and Taxation.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Victoria

01What do you attribute your success to?

I believe that any young woman just starting in academia needs a strong academic foundation, determination, and support from family and colleagues. It’s very important to maintain good relationships within a department, college, university, and professional community. Clearly, for women with children, the role of mother never goes away. I don’t have a specific formula for planning a woman’s academic schedule to keep up with everything. I was committed to accomplishing everything and kept moving forward. My kids are now grown, successful, and I am a tenured professor. I have achieved what I aimed for. Could I be more efficient in the process? Absolutely, I could. Did I make mistakes along the way? Absolutely, I did. But I believe that making mistakes is normal, and accepting that we are not perfect is also an essential part of growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was to be patient—stay calm. Whenever I faced a very stressful situation, I thought back to my colleague, Professor Gene Wittenberg. Before I earned tenure and became a full professor, he would come up to me and say, ‘Victoria, just calm down and be patient.’ It helps a lot in life—calm down, be patient, and do your best. I understand that it’s not easy to follow this advice because we are all emotionally invested in everything that is happening to us.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

These human values are important to everyone, including but not limited to loyalty, honesty, collegiality, and support. They matter to all of us, regardless of our profession. Additionally, professionalism, which is also vital in any field, plays a crucial role.
