Her Story

About Victoria

I am a composer, music director, and arranger. I started as a classical pianist and developed into playing with absolute musical freedom. I attended a conservatory for classical, played at church, and played with a rap group. The through line is my connection to being a performer in the service of music, which opened doors to music directing, composing, and arranging.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Victoria

01What do you attribute your success to?

A large portion of grace, a natural proclivity to the arts, good teachers, a wonderful support system and community, and the African Philosophy of Ubuntu which is human-centered, offering music as a gift back to community to uplift and give insight into beauty.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The aphorism of how you do anything is how you do everything, so I do everything with excellence and that has paid off.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If there's anything else you can do, do that, because music is that hard. But if you know in your heart this is it, this is what I do, this is where my calling is, then go for it, but just know it's not for the faint of heart.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the lack of appreciation from people who have means, emphasis on wealth hoarding, underpaying artists, and the economics making it hard for young musicians to sustain after expensive education with loans. The biggest opportunity is finding the right community and support system to do your own music independently without relying on the industry, using platforms like Kickstarters or patrons, and learning from online videos.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Connection, kindness, honesty.
