Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having a transparent and open relationship with my executive, who has helped me learn the skills that I have, but also challenged me to be the best that I can be. Working with my executive over the last 11 years has been a great treat, and that relationship has been instrumental in developing the expertise I now share with others through Aspiring Admins.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received really speaks to one of my challenges - I'm a perfectionist, but that's not always the best approach. The advice was to try to figure out a way to get everything done, but don't hold back and make sure that everything's perfect, because then the work won't get done. I've learned that 80% is pretty much gonna be the best to get it moving, and the rest will take care of itself. This has helped me overcome my perfectionist tendencies and be more productive.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure that you love to serve another. If your heart isn't in it, then this is not the field for you. The administrative profession is fundamentally about service, and you have to have that passion for helping others to truly succeed and find fulfillment in this work.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is for assistants to be able to sit in the same room with their executive and making sure that they're aligned. That's the biggest hurdle we have. Sometimes the executives don't see the value in it, so we have to help them understand what the value is for them to be in the room instead of having the side conversations after. Getting executives to recognize the strategic value of including their assistants in key meetings and discussions is critical to building effective partnerships.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are doing what you say you're going to do, trust, and being honest with yourself, your client, whoever you're working with, and your customer. Trust is huge for me, and I believe that honesty and accountability are the foundation of any successful professional or personal relationship.
