Her Interview

Ten minutes with Vijayalakshmi

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of relentless curiosity, rigorous cross-functional collaboration, and a commitment to data-driven storytelling. In complex environments, it's easy to get lost in the numbers. Success has come from bridging the gap between deep analytics and strategic business outcomes—making sure data isn't just an report, but an actionable roadmap. More importantly, no metric or model succeeds in a silo; my achievements are a direct result of empowering brilliant cross-functional teams to challenge assumptions, test boldly, and align around a shared vision.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Advocate for yourself. Advocating for yourself isn't bragging—it's leadership. No one else is going to champion your wins, your vision, or your growth quite like you will. Waiting for someone to magically notice your impact is a slow path forward. For me, owning your narrative means making sure your contributions are visible, being crystal clear about your trajectory, and speaking up for your value before you're even asked. When you treat self-advocacy as a strategic part of how you operate, you ensure the value you create is understood and aligned with where you're heading.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Entering this industry requires a combination of technical rigor and strategic vision. Never wait for permission to lead; step into the white space, solve complex problems, and take ownership of your scope. Master the ability to translate complex data into compelling business stories that drive executive decisions. Build a web of sponsors who will champion your work and advocate for you behind closed doors. Most importantly, aggressively advocate for yourself and ensure your impact is visible. Own your expertise, embrace cross-functional synergy, and remember that you earned your seat at the table.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our field right now is the massive gap between raw data and true business understanding. Organizations collect endless streams of information, but the real hurdle is cutting through the noise and translating complex metrics into a clear narrative that executives can actually act on. On the flip side, a massive opportunity lies in mastering the art of data storytelling and cross-functional synergy. The professionals and teams who pull ahead are not the ones with the most complicated dashboards, but the ones who can build a bridge between technical insights and strategic business outcomes. When you stop talking about models and start telling a compelling story about why the data matters and what decisions it drives, you transform analytics from a back-office support function into a true engine for growth.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, curiosity, and impact are at the core of everything I do. Professionally, that means bringing rigorous thinking and cross-functional synergy to solve complex problems while championing ownership and transparency. Personally, it’s about staying deeply connected to my family, embracing continuous growth, and showing up with empathy and intention—all while trying to model those same values so my kids learn to stay curious, act with integrity, and make a positive mark on the world.
