Her Interview

Ten minutes with Vonda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, a strong commitment to continuing my education despite setbacks, and the encouragement of people who genuinely believed in me. Returning to school after a seven-year break was not easy, but the support of those who cared about my future gave me the confidence to keep moving forward. I also believe that maintaining integrity, working hard, and staying focused on my goals have been essential to my personal and professional growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to surround myself with people who genuinely care about my success and are willing to encourage me when I doubt myself. My best friend, Jason Johnson, inspired me to return to school after seven years away and reminded me that I was capable of achieving my goals. That encouragement taught me the importance of believing in myself and continuing to pursue growth despite challenges.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering this industry to surround themselves with people who truly support and believe in them. Allow yourself to accept encouragement during moments of self-doubt, continue pursuing your goals despite obstacles, and never settle for mediocrity. Believe in your abilities, remain resilient, and stay committed to becoming the best version of yourself both personally and professionally.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges is navigating a traditionally male-dominated fitness industry, including overcoming appearance-based bias, inappropriate hiring motives, and managing client relationships professionally and respectfully. Another challenge is helping clients work through the emotional aspects of health, fitness, and body image without creating feelings of insecurity. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities as more women enter the profession and as the demand grows for clear, simplified nutrition education and practical wellness guidance, particularly for older adults and the geriatric community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, honesty, trust, and following through on my commitments are the values that guide every aspect of my work and personal life. I believe in being honest with myself and others, honoring my responsibilities, and consistently doing what I say I will do. These principles help me build meaningful relationships and earn the trust of the people I serve.
