Her Story
About Voranique
I've been in the engineering industry for over 30 years. After graduating from Texas A&M University with my bachelor's degree in civil engineering, I worked for various larger engineering firms doing municipal design work. In 2010, I started Simon Engineering and Consulting, Inc., and we've been in business for 16 years now. We are a general civil engineering firm that designs roadways, drainage systems, and water and wastewater systems. Our work ranges from small site development projects, like doing a grading plan for somebody building a home, to large highway design projects. I don't necessarily say that we have a specialty, but we cover those design services on small and large projects. One of my most notable achievements was that out of the gate, less than a year into business, the very first project we pursued on our own, we won. Just the experience of putting a proposal together, going to an interview, and doing all the things that it takes to win a project, we were successful out the gate, and to me, that still is a huge success. But my other major achievement is creating a space where minorities and women can thrive. The whole reason for starting this firm, which was never even part of my plan or goal, was because of my own experience coming up as a Black woman in the industry. I had to determine my why, and for me, it was creating that space because I didn't have that space when I was coming up in the industry. I'm a licensed professional engineer in multiple states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and Tennessee.

01What do you attribute your success to?
My faith, bottom line.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
First of all, understand that where you are is where you're supposed to be. We tend to always look for the next, and if we're not happy where we are, then we think this is not where I'm supposed to be. But if you understand that it is where you're supposed to be, then you're gonna learn everything you can at that stage of your life, because where you are is preparing you for the next day, whether you like it or not. We're there for a reason, so get what you can and be patient until it's time for that next stage. And then in that next stage, get everything you can, regardless of whether you're enjoying that time in life or not. Glean, glean, glean, because it's preparing you for the next.
