Her Story

About Wanda

Wanda Matthews is the founder of a developing battered women's shelter in Detroit, Michigan, a mission rooted in her personal experience as a survivor of domestic violence prior to 1994, when resources for victims were limited. After receiving 501(c)(3) status, she is focused on securing funding from organizations and establishing consistent monthly donations to provide reliable cash flow for shelter operations. Her vision is to create a safe haven where women can find support, rebuild their confidence, and understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Through this work, Matthews is committed to empowering women to move forward, overcome difficult circumstances, and pursue brighter futures.

In addition to her nonprofit work, Matthews is an Apheresis Specialist with the American Red Cross and a Notary Signing Agent with AAJC LLC in Detroit, Michigan. At the American Red Cross, she performs blood separation procedures involving platelets, plasma, and red blood cells. Her professional background spans healthcare, manufacturing, cosmetology, and professional services. She began her career studying cosmetology at Jordan College and working as a beautician while also serving as a nurse's aide. She later worked with General Motors/Lear Corporation before pursuing a career in healthcare. After earning her GED at age 32, Matthews continued her education and earned an Associate Degree in Medical Assistant/Phlebotomy from Davenport University. Her healthcare experience also includes inpatient phlebotomy and a previous position as an Apheresis Specialist with Michigan Blood.

As a Notary Signing Agent with AAJC LLC, Matthews provides document notarization and loan-closing services while continuing to pursue opportunities to serve others. Throughout her career and community work, she has remained guided by trust, honesty, compassion, and a strong helping spirit. Matthews is passionate about lifting those around her and believes in staying organized, remaining focused on one's goals, and refusing to let obstacles or the opinions of others derail one's dreams. Through both her professional work and her commitment to the shelter, she strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and encourage women to recognize their strength and possibilities.
