Her Story

About Wanda

I've been in the medical field since 1996, which is nearly 30 years now. I currently serve as the Assistant Medical Director at MedFlorida Medical Centers, where I've been for 4 years. In this role, I oversee 18 clinics with about 32 providers, all focused on primary care, internal medicine, and family practice. I pretty much oversee all of them and handle all their education, all their HEDIS, and everything administrative, as well as overseeing them directly. What I'm most proud of professionally is really increasing and making better the culture amongst the providers in our company. I graduated from medical school in 1996 from Ponce Medical School in Puerto Rico, after completing my bachelor's degree in pre-med at the University of Puerto Rico. From there, I went to do my family practice residency at South Nassau Community Hospital in Long Island, New York. I had a passion for helping people since I was very little, and I come from a family with a medical background. I basically wanted to use my knowledge to help others, and medicine was pretty much one of the avenues to do that.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Wanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance throughout the years and resilience. I've also had a lot of support around me to help me move forward. These three things - perseverance, resilience, and the support system I've built - have been essential to everything I've accomplished in my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to always keep my values independently of what people around me do - to do the right thing. And basically, never give up. Keep pushing. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career and has guided me through challenging times.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't wait to feel confident - basically ask for what you need and advocate for yourself. It's a very competitive field, so you need to keep learning. As a woman, I think one of the biggest challenges is keeping your family and work balanced. So my advice is to be confident in advocating for yourself while also being prepared for the ongoing challenge of balancing your professional and personal life.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Medicine is constantly changing, so keeping up and studying with new things that are always coming up is one of the biggest challenges. I would say the challenge is not so much the difficulty, but that you have to keep up with the ever-changing practice of medicine. It requires continuous learning and adaptation to stay current in the field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are being open, being transparent, and being a team player. I also believe strongly in taking accountability for what I do. These are the main values that guide both my work and personal life - openness, transparency, teamwork, and accountability.
