About Wendie
I've been in my field for over 30 years, and my path to nursing started in an unexpected way. I took a CNA class and absolutely fell in love with the people at that nursing home. I would go after hours to paint their nails because they just didn't have enough time, nobody had enough time for them. That's what started me down this path. I had considered being a teacher and even a veterinarian, but I said no, that's too long, we need to get something now. So I went into registered nursing, and while I really thought I wanted to do labor and delivery, I fell back in love with the geriatric population. My greatest professional achievement was getting my nursing degree because I did it backwards - I got married at a very young age, 2 days after I turned 18, but I put myself back through school with the help of my dad's scholarship. Today, my main area of expertise is probably technology and artificial intelligence and how it'll make an impact on people in their homes who need assistance and don't have family close by. Private caregivers can only do so much and they're expensive, especially if you're looking at 24-7 care, so whatever you could implement in the home would be a benefit, and it can only get better with technology. Recently, my husband and I wrote a book called 'It's Been a Trip' about our life experiences together as husband and wife with God as the centerpiece in our marriage, about how miracles really can happen.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to just hang on in school, because it's an endurance course. School is to weed out the weak, and so if this is something you really, really want to do, then stick with it. Whatever you start, finish it - I think that's the greatest achievement, is finishing what you start.
