Her Story

About Wendy

Wendy Bonnick is the CFO of BACB21Co, the 501(c)(3) non-profit business founded by her late son Brian Albert Cornelius Bonnick, and the founder of Gifted Mind Scholars, an in-home tutoring service focused on reading and math. With more than 35 years of experience as a certified elementary education teacher, she has taught in classrooms across Atlanta, New York, and overseas in Kuwait, where she served as an MBA principal for five years. She holds a master's degree in reading with a focus on education, reading, and literacy, as well as a bachelor's degree in behavioral science. Originally from Jamaica, Bonnick migrated to the United States in 1991 and was inspired to pursue teaching by her late principal, Sister Frances. She launched Gifted Mind Scholars to address gaps in student learning, drawing on her passion for helping children succeed with current, relevant instruction. Bonnick attributes her professional fulfillment to the opportunity to nurture students as if they were her own, a calling she describes as a gift from God that allows her to continue being a mother figure following the 2021 passing of her only child.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Wendy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to working in the lives of children. God gave me one and took him back, so I continue being a mom to the students I work with. Every school year someone calls me mom. I have a heart for children and that's a gift from God naturally. As soon as a child needs me I just say hello and they're hugging me. It's the gift of being a teacher and a mom to the children that I never birthed.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice came from feedback from my students. They tell me I am the best teacher ever and that makes my heart glow. Even years later parents and kids remember me fondly and say I was such a great teacher. Coming from a kid's mouth it feels like a butterfly in my stomach and I thank the Lord for the gift.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value most that students learn and the care that I give them like my own, like I birth them. I am passionate about children and get to the deep end of their lacking in math or reading. I teach current things that will help them be the leaders of tomorrow. I am a current teacher and don't teach things back in the 50s.
