Her Story
About Wendy
Wendy Dole has been working in the technology industry since 1993, for a total of 33 years. She earned her degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, including a double major in management computer systems and organizational communication, followed by a master's degree in computer science. She serves on the board of directors for Women in Technology for Wisconsin, where she has participated for approximately four years, and on the board of directors for the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation for one year, where she co-chairs a major food and wine fundraising event. In her approach to leadership, she follows a servant leadership model, prioritizing the success and professional development of her team members so they can make independent decisions and require less oversight. She has noted that one of the biggest challenges in her field is the rapid evolution of AI tools, which requires keeping teams current without causing change fatigue while still delivering customer value. A key piece of career advice she values is determining what one can control or affect and letting go of the rest.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Wendy
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One piece of advice that stuck was at some point you have to decide what can I control, what can I really affect, and then let the other things go. If you can't let those things go, then maybe you're not where you should be. Focus on what you can really change, control, effect, and let the other things go.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is that with AI and everything that has come out recently, tools are changing so fast. How do you keep people up to speed and working on the latest tool without the change fatigue that comes along, while still producing things that your customers need.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The only way I look good, the only way I'm successful, is if people that work for me are successful. It's my job to make sure they're as successful as possible, to build them up. I believe in the servant leadership type of model. My goal is to build their skill set up to the point where they barely need me.
