Her Story

About Wendy

Wendy Edwards serves as Project Coordinator for a construction company based in Axis, Alabama. She has spent the last three years in this role after accumulating eight years total in the construction field. Her responsibilities include coordinating new construction projects, additions, and work involving piping and steel, with a recent major project being the ground-up construction of an aluminum plant. Edwards typically works on-site to oversee daily operations, ensure safety compliance, and manage timelines amid multiple contractors. Prior to construction, she spent ten years in human resources at a family business and six years as an engineer assistant at a manufacturer producing vessel tanks for 18-wheelers and oil rigs. She holds an OSHA 30 certification for safety oversight and advanced her career without a college degree by working her way up through on-the-job learning. Edwards attributes her success to hard work and dedication, often putting in ten-hour days, and values family above all, having entered the industry as a single parent seeking better income opportunities. She advises letting challenges roll off one's shoulders in a male-dominated field and encourages young women to push forward, noting the rewards of seeing completed projects. She supports Make-A-Wish and Ronald McDonald House through annual donations.

01What do you attribute your success to?

Hard work and dedication. We work most days are 10-hour days, you know, so it is hard work.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Let it roll off your shoulders. Because I am in a 90% men environment. Women are a minority in the construction world.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It's a lot of work. It's a lot of learning, but it's a reward when you see something that your company has built. Just push forward, and you can do anything that you set your mind to.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenge is competition because there's so many construction companies coming up. Opportunity is to keep moving up and learn how to estimate and bid the jobs.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My family. My kids. I got in the construction world for my kids because women not having an education a lot of times you don't make that much in your career. Family is everything to me.
