Her Story

About Wendy

Wendy Grindstaff-Wade is a dedicated intervention specialist with nine years of experience supporting students with diverse learning needs at Horizon Science Academy of Toledo. Her career in education is rooted in 18 years of homeschooling her six children, where she developed extensive expertise in differentiated instruction and individualized learning approaches. Inspired by her passion for helping others, she pursued higher education to become an intervention specialist after first working as a direct support professional for adults with autism at Bittersweet Farms. This unique combination of personal and professional experience has equipped Wendy with a deep understanding of developmental differences and the importance of fostering meaningful educational opportunities for every learner.

Throughout her career, Wendy has become a respected advocate for students with developmental delays and autism, emphasizing that learning differences are not indicators of limited intelligence but opportunities for tailored instruction and growth. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she has served as behavior lead, participating in suspension and expulsion hearings while collaborating with colleagues to strengthen special education programming and improve departmental practices. Her commitment to student advocacy, perseverance, and practical life-skills instruction has helped create supportive learning environments that empower students to reach their fullest potential.

Beyond her professional role, Wendy is an active member of Scouting America and has volunteered for seven years as a camp medic at Camp Freelander, where she provides emergency medical support during summer programs. She has earned certifications in Basic Life Saving, Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED, and has completed Wood Badge leadership training, reflecting her commitment to service and leadership. Guided by compassion, teamwork, and a belief in the transformative power of individualized education, Wendy continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of her students, their families, and her community.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, determination, and a lifelong commitment to learning and serving others. Homeschooling my six children for 18 years as a single parent taught me perseverance, adaptability, and the value of investing in the growth of others. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a career as an intervention specialist, where I have the privilege of helping students with diverse learning needs overcome challenges and reach their full potential. Having personally navigated dyslexia and dyscalculia, I understand the importance of self-advocacy, confidence, and persistence, and I strive to instill those qualities in every student I mentor. Beyond my professional role, volunteering as a medic with Scouting America reflects my dedication to service, leadership, and making a meaningful difference in my community.
