Her Story

About Wendy

I began my career working in pharmacy as a certified technician since high school, first at Safeway Pharmacy then in hospital settings. After earning my bachelor's in sociology with a psychology minor, I moved into teaching at Front Range Community College as pharmacy technician faculty, advancing to program director and department chair. Currently, as Academic Dean at Red Rocks Community College, I oversee multiple academies and programs including law enforcement, fire, paramedic, and social sciences while serving as Hispanic Serving Institution Task Force Chair. I am also a co-author of the Pharmacy Technician Labs textbook and recently earned the CU Boulder Outstanding Educator Award.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Wendy

01What do you attribute your success to?

My daughters. I want them to know that it's possible for them to accomplish everything. I got pregnant really young and didn't have a lot of support. I keep pushing forward so I can be a better mentor for my kids and other individuals who come from similar backgrounds.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Keep going with my education because that's something that no one can ever take away from you. One of my deans encouraged me to pursue my doctorate even during personal challenges.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

There are going to be some barriers and challenges but get a mentor and a support system. Keep pushing forward because it's not easy especially for women and Latinas. Get the education and knowledge so you come prepared.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is limited job openings at senior and executive levels in the state. Opportunities include many professional development options to help advance.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Community is the biggest value for both work and personal life. Treating everyone with respect and building community to get buy-in from individuals.
