Her Interview
Ten minutes with Whitney
01What do you attribute your success to?
Success is the direct result of relentless hard work, an unyielding drive to solve complex problems, and the backing of an incredibly supportive family. As a Black woman navigating the corporate world, maintaining momentum and actively seeking out new challenges has been fundamental to my growth. Thriving in business requires a passion for stepping into disorganized situations, fixing systemic issues, and building optimized strategies to ensure an organization runs at its absolute best. This exact problem-solving mindset is what fuels career advancement and lays the groundwork for launching a successful independent business.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice is to treat every single day as an interview and intentionally build lasting professional relationships. You never know who is watching your work, listening to your ideas, or where those individuals will be a decade down the line. A significant portion of career trajectory is influenced by the network you build and the impression you leave behind. By consistently putting your best foot forward, maintaining meaningful connections, and staying in touch with past colleagues, you open unexpected doors to future opportunities and long-term career advancement.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The financial sector offers a vast array of career paths far beyond the traditional entry-level teller roles that many people associate with banks. There are incredible opportunities to innovate, strategize, and lead within this space. For young women entering the workforce, the most vital piece of advice is to never let a "no" derail your ambition. Rejection is often a blessing in disguise and a clear signal to pivot. When you hit a wall, look for another angle or a different path. Use those moments to redirect your energy toward environments where your voice is genuinely valued, your talent is respected, and you can achieve the success you deserve.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The credit union sector faces an increasingly demanding landscape driven by rapid consolidation, structural mergers, and a heavy regulatory environment. Smaller credit unions, in particular, face operational strain trying to keep pace with complex compliance policies, which threatens their long-term sustainability. However, this systemic challenge underscores the critical importance of credit unions as non-profit, member-owned alternatives to traditional big banks. The current environment presents a massive opportunity for dedicated advocacy work. By actively fighting for fair regulations and helping these institutions optimize their business models, advocates can ensure that credit unions survive and continue to provide accessible, mission-driven financial support to the communities that rely on them.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Uncompromising Integrity: Especially within financial institutions, total honesty and ethical behavior are non-negotiable. Leadership means setting an unshakeable standard of integrity for yourself and ensuring everyone around you upholds that same benchmark. Loyalty: True loyalty becomes incredibly clear during personal hardships or health challenges. Surrounding yourself with a rock-solid foundation of loyal family and friends provides the stability needed to take professional risks. Accountability: Doing things to the absolute best of your ability and holding your team accountable to high operational standards.
