Ten minutes with Xiomara
01What do you attribute your success to?
“My global experiences taught me to see education not just as instruction, but as empowerment across cultures.”
“I attribute my success to the resilience shaped by my upbringing, a lifelong commitment to education, and the emotional and cultural intelligence that guides my leadership. My global experiences across Panama and the United States strengthened my belief that education is a transformative force. Every step of my journey — from teaching at‑risk youth in the South Bronx to leading international school programs — reflects my dedication to uplifting others, expanding opportunity, and remaining true to continuous growth.”
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
1. Growth is a lifelong commitment.
Every certification, degree, endorsement, and new curriculum, and Hybrid Teaching mastered reflects my belief that professionals must evolve to meet the needs of the communities they serve.
2. Leadership requires humility.
You learned that the strongest leaders are those who remain teachable — willing to listen, adapt, and embrace new perspectives.
3. Progress matters more than perfection.
This aligns with a quote from Plato:
“Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.” It reminds you that steady, intentional growth builds lasting impact.
4. Your journey is your strength.
Make every experience in your career and life not just part of your story — Instead, it is your advantage.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to seek out internship opportunities and gain hands-on experience early in their careers. I also encourage them to take elective courses related to education and professional development, as building a strong foundation in learning and communication is invaluable. Education has always been a priority in my life—both of my parents were teachers, and their dedication inspired me to recognize the importance of continuous growth, knowledge, and mentorship. Finally, as you age and gain more experience consider educational services and tap into these...and Be The Best Version of Yourself!
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges in Education
- Students are navigating anxiety, isolation, and post‑pandemic adjustment. Schools must strengthen emotional support systems and train teachers in trauma‑informed practices.
- Students at risk of dropping out — especially multilingual learners, students of color, and those in low‑income communities — continue to face barriers.
- Educators are leaving the profession at alarming rates. Workload, emotional strain, and insufficient support structures make retention a critical issue.
- AI, digital platforms, and virtual learning require constant adaptation. Schools must balance innovation with responsible, equitable access. Students need skills for a global, multilingual, tech‑driven future — yet many curricula lag behind the realities of modern life.
Major Opportunities
- Digital tools now allow educators to tailor instruction to individual needs, learning styles, and pacing — a breakthrough for multilingual and diverse learners.
- Schools increasingly value bilingualism, cultural identity, and global perspectives. Your career across Panama and the U.S. positions you as a leader in this movement.
- Foundations, nonprofits, and local organizations are stepping in to support students.
- National Board Certification, micro‑credentials, and leadership endorsements empower educators to grow professionally and schools are embracing social‑emotional learning, mental health support, and character development as essential components of academic success.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
“The values most essential to empowering students are empathy, integrity, cultural intelligence, high expectations with compassion, lifelong learning, advocacy, and community building. These values allow educators to uplift every learner and create environments where students feel seen, supported, and capable of achieving their fullest potential.”
“The values that shape my personal life are faith, integrity, compassion, perseverance, cultural pride, service, and purpose‑driven leadership". These values guide how I live, how I lead, and how I empower others — from my first teaching class in 1988 to my three adult children and earn the respect of my husband as they pay testimony to my dedication as an educator.
