Her Story
About Yakira
I currently work as a wellness coach, pharmacy technician, and wellness advocate at Moffitt Cancer Center, where I've been a pharmacy technician for about 6 years and a wellness consultant for 3 years. I work in investigational drug services with patients on clinical trials, which is a high-intensity environment where we have to adhere to quality assurance and maintain protocol for patients, medications, and sponsors. As a pharmacy wellness advocate, I facilitate mindful movement sessions on Thursdays for our full pharmacy department across five departments at several Moffitt locations, implementing health and wellness for our employees through hydration challenges and wellness engagement activities to keep our nervous system settled in our high-intense workspace. My passion for wellness was deeply influenced by my sister, who passed away from a pulmonary embolism related to obesity, which inspired me to bring health awareness to underserved communities. I describe myself as reverse engineering from a pharmacy tech to a nutritional wellness coach, merging my hobbies with my career to create a full, inclusive wellness environment that bridges community and corporate wellness. Through my consulting work, I do fitness and nutrition consulting, helping people create better habits and learn how to incorporate healthy habits, meeting them where they are. I'm a licensed practitioner for mindful movement for people with chronic disease and cancer patients, which I became in January 2023. I work with Tampa Heights Community Gardens on the wellness education side, doing food demonstrations and partnering with healthcare facilities like Tampa Grow Well Foundation and West Tampa Grows Healthy to teach people how to grow in a garden, be in a garden, and practice mindful movement like yoga and stretching to help increase mobility and reverse chronic disease through small lifestyle changes.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Start where you are, you know? Grow where you are, connect with like-minded people where you want to go. Start where you are, but connect with people who are where you want to be. And just enjoy the process along the way. Because that's really, it's all about the journey, you know? Even now, with me circling back, working with people that I worked with before when I didn't have any experience, it's really about building relationships and just having fun and enjoying the process, 100%.
