Her Story
About Yariela
Yariela Sequeira is the Founder and CEO of More Than Counseling, LLC, based in Miami, Florida, where she brings over two decades of experience in mental health counseling, education, personal growth, and corporate events. Her journey into the field began in her 20s through her family’s educational and consulting agency, where she developed an early passion for supporting individuals in their personal and professional development. Since establishing her private practice in 2018, Sequeira has provided individual, group, and family counseling to diverse populations, helping clients navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, addiction, anger, and other life transitions. She is licensed in her field, holding a master's degree in psychology with a minor in organizational psychology, as well as an MBA. She has pursued additional training and certifications in a variety of clinical modalities, including alternative approaches such as energetic healing and mystery teachings. Throughout her career, Sequeira has remained committed to expanding the way mental health and well-being are understood and supported. Her professional experience includes supporting families, single parents, individuals involved with the criminal justice system, people experiencing homelessness and addiction, and clients facing complex emotional and social circumstances. She has also served as a faculty member and psychoeducation professional, sharing her knowledge through counseling education, workshops, community events, guest lecturing, and educational video content. Sequeira has been involved with professional organizations including the American Academy of Psychotherapists, where she has presented at conferences, as well as other professional mental health associations. Her commitment to service extends beyond her clinical practice through volunteer work with organizations and institutions including Children’s SOS Villages, a psychiatric hospital in Nicaragua, different orphanages, and Camillus House. Sequeira’s approach to her profession is grounded in humanity, authenticity, transparency, and genuine connection. She attributes her success to treating clients with the same compassion and respect she would extend to a friend or family member, creating an environment where people feel safe to be honest about their experiences and challenges. She believes that difficulties are a natural part of the human experience and emphasizes the importance of normalizing those experiences while maintaining professional boundaries and thoughtful self-awareness. Beyond individual counseling, she applies this human-centered philosophy to workplace wellness, helping organizations address occupational stress, communication challenges, psychological safety, leadership, and team dynamics. Her advice to young women entering the field is to find the professional style that feels authentic to them, remain true to their values and strengths, and understand that not everyone will resonate with their approach—and that authenticity is ultimately more important than universal approval.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Yariela
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to leading with humanity and genuinely connecting with others. I communicate with my clients as I would with a trusted friend or family member, creating an environment where there is no unnecessary separation or judgment. I value transparency, authenticity, and honest communication, including being open about challenges and difficult experiences. By acknowledging and normalizing the struggles that come with being human, I am able to build trust, foster meaningful relationships, and support others in feeling seen, understood, and appreciated.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received has come from the mentors and colleagues who have influenced my professional journey. Antonio Lourenco, a university professor, taught me the importance of expressing emotions appropriately and using emotional awareness as a strength. My friend and therapist colleague, Paola Rodriguez, encouraged and supported me as I launched my practice, while Lila Denton guided me throughout my training in energetic practices. Each of these individuals helped me grow in different ways, reinforcing the value of mentorship, self-awareness, authenticity, and remaining open to learning throughout my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to find the professional style and approach that genuinely works for you, and then have the confidence to stay true to it. You do not need to change who you are to meet everyone else’s expectations or gain universal approval. Understand that not everyone will resonate with your approach, and that is okay. Authenticity, self-awareness, and confidence in your own strengths will help you build meaningful relationships, establish credibility, and create a career that reflects who you truly are.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is the rapid integration of artificial intelligence and the growing tendency for individuals to rely on AI tools for guidance and support. While AI can be a valuable resource, it still has significant limitations, particularly when it comes to understanding human emotions, personal circumstances, and the complexity of individual experiences. At the same time, this shift presents an opportunity to educate people about the importance of combining technology with authentic human connection and professional expertise. Social media also has a tremendous influence on how people seek information and support, making it increasingly important to promote thoughtful, responsible, and human-centered approaches within the field.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my professional and personal life are honesty, transparency, and curiosity. I believe in communicating openly and authentically, building relationships based on trust, and being transparent even when conversations may be challenging. Curiosity keeps me open to learning, asking meaningful questions, understanding different perspectives, and continually growing both personally and professionally.
