Her Interview

Ten minutes with Yolanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to not taking myself too seriously and not being afraid to fail. I have learned the importance of connecting with people who recognize potential in others and being willing to ask for and receive feedback. I am also committed to working hard, giving 100 percent to what I do, and continually looking for creative ways to improve. Staying open to learning, feedback, and new possibilities has played an important role throughout my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to remain open to new opportunities and to actively seek feedback. I have learned not to take myself too seriously and to view failure as an important part of growth. Building relationships with people who recognize my potential has also been invaluable, as has maintaining a strong work ethic and a willingness to keep learning. These principles have encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, embrace new challenges, and continue developing both personally and professionally.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to be a go-getter and never become too comfortable. Build meaningful connections with people, learn as much as you can, and continually look for opportunities to expand your skills. Do not limit yourself or assume that you have to stay within one defined path. When opportunities or invitations come your way, say yes and be willing to explore where they may lead.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities I see in dentistry is the ability to bridge the gap between oral health and overall health. There is an important opportunity to continue demonstrating how closely dental care is connected to a person's broader health and well-being.

At the same time, dental professionals deserve the same level of respect and recognition as professionals in other areas of healthcare. Another challenge is that the industry can be highly competitive and, at times, place too much emphasis on financial considerations rather than patient care. Continuing to prioritize education, clinical excellence, and the needs of patients will be important as the field evolves.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My Christian faith and values, along with my family, are extremely important to me. I believe in working hard while also making time to enjoy life. I value continuous learning and, just as importantly, applying what I learn in meaningful ways. Helping others and contributing to society are also central to who I am. I believe in surrounding myself with like-minded people, supporting one another, and paying it forward whenever I have the opportunity.
