Q

What do you attribute your success to?

As a single mom, I think for me, the drive is what attributes to my success. I had all my kids before I went to pharmacy school, and I came out with a strong GPA. I looked at where I came from, I knew I had nothing, but I was seeking for more. That was my drive. And then, even when I had setbacks along the way, I had failures and all those things, that flexibility came into play. It's a broad degree, so I asked myself, what else can I do? Where can I go? That mindset of being flexible and willing to explore new opportunities, rather than getting stuck in one way, has been key to everything I've accomplished.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My biggest advice, based on my experience and especially what I am struggling with, is that it's not what you have, it's who you know. Don't focus only on having the certificates, but also work on building your network. Try to network, because that plays a very important role, especially in the current society in which we live. Secondly, if Plan A doesn't work for you, don't give up. Never give up. Always look at the opportunities that are right in front of you, rather than holding on to what is not working for you. Have the mindset and be willing to be flexible. Be willing to be open to new things, be willing to be open to new opportunities. Don't get stuck in one way because you feel like, this is what I have, this is how it should go.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

As a Christian, I have a passion in the women's ministry, and I believe in women empowering women. When I hear influential women, it means a lot to me. Back in the days, even here in the States, women were looked upon like a woman should not be equal to a man, a woman should not be making as much as a man. So to see women that are influential, women that are willing to stand for themselves and not depend on someone means a lot. My theme in life has always been women empowering women.
