I stopped seeking external validation and started validating myself. Once I oriented around my own values and goals, I stopped abandoning things simply because someone else didn't validate them.

Her Story

About Zaira

Zaira Collazo is the Founder and CEO of Collazo & Co., a transformation architecture firm based in Greenville, South Carolina. With more than 25 years of professional experience spanning banking, insurance, manufacturing, and technology, she has built her career helping organizations move from strategic intent to structured execution.

Her background includes leadership roles at major institutions such as Citibank and New York Life Insurance, as well as vice president–level positions overseeing project management offices and enterprise transformation initiatives. A Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and systems thinker, Zaira specializes in operating model design, portfolio governance, PMO strategy, change leadership, and pragmatic AI integration for growth-stage and mid-market companies.

What distinguishes Zaira’s approach is her belief that technology alone cannot transform an organization—people can. She launched her advisory practice after recognizing two widening gaps: the gap between sophisticated transformation services offered by major consulting firms and what mid-sized organizations could realistically access, and the growing disconnect between organizations and their employees in the years following the pandemic.

Rather than treating change management as an afterthought, Zaira builds the systems that make transformation sustainable: performance and operating models, governance structures, portfolio frameworks, and cross-functional accountability mechanisms designed with employee adoption and organizational readiness at the center.

Zaira built her career without a traditional four-year degree, developing her expertise through continuous learning, hands-on experience, and professional certifications in highly competitive corporate environments. She holds an Associate Degree in Religious Studies, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, and credentials in Asana administration and AI Studio Foundations.

Beyond her consulting work, Zaira is a devoted mother, active PTA participant, entrepreneur, writer, and podcaster. She also operates a second business focused on collectible adult action figures. Through her writing and podcasting, she explores organizational systems, workplace respect, and the evolving relationship between people and the organizations they work for.

A native Spanish speaker, Zaira brings curiosity, tenacity, and a willingness to challenge the status quo to her work. Her approach is grounded in a simple premise: business performance and human dignity should never be treated as competing priorities.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Zaira

01What do you attribute your success to?

I credit much of my success to tenacity and, frankly, a bit of stubbornness. I’ve always been curious, and I refuse to accept an answer simply at face value. I ask the questions that need to be asked, even when they’re uncomfortable, and I keep digging until I understand what’s really happening. That persistence has shaped how I approach every organization I work with: with curiosity, candor, and a willingness to challenge assumptions in pursuit of a better way forward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most important lesson I’ve carried forward is to never play small. Qualifications matter, but so do experience, judgment, curiosity, and courage. I’ve learned to stay grounded while pursuing ambitious goals, because success means very little if it requires sacrificing authenticity, empathy, or family along the way.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is simple: stay curious, remain grounded, and don’t play it small. Ask questions, especially when something doesn’t make sense, and never assume the established way of doing things is automatically the right way. Advocate for your ideas, trust the value of your own experience, and don’t let being the only woman in the room make you question whether you belong there. Keep learning, keep challenging assumptions, and stay willing to evolve as the industry does.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest shifts I’m seeing is in the job market itself. Transformation was traditionally a function embedded within an organization, but I’m seeing much more movement toward fractional leadership and independent consulting, particularly among experienced women at this stage of their careers.

At the same time, one of the biggest challenges is ensuring that companies don’t mistake technology implementation for true transformation. Even significant investments in AI can fail to deliver meaningful value without the communication, training, governance, and employee adoption needed to make the technology work in practice. Transformation isn’t achieved by deploying a tool; it happens when people understand it, trust it, and know how to use it effectively.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family keeps me grounded above all else. Integrity, compassion, and empathy guide how I lead and how I treat the people I work with, along with a genuine understanding that people learn, process, and adapt differently. Accountability ties it all together—for myself and for the teams I support.
