Her Interview
Ten minutes with Zayra
01What do you attribute your success to?
I had awesome parents who put real life values into us, me and my sisters. What really drove me came from my father because he was an HR director and senior HR person for many years. My mom was a history teacher always teaching us about history and the morals and values. Being Latin and growing up in Florida in the 80s we went through some hurdles moving into a new country and studied a lot about diversity. I believe if you can master working multiculturally and respecting other people's cultures you will be successful in any job.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stay true to yourself, to who you are. Do your work but don't change for others. Make sure that what you're doing fits you. Don't let anybody put you down for not accomplishing something because we are made to be able to get up and we are strong.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't let anyone put you down or make you feel like you're not enough. Know your value and know who you are. You can always come back from anything. Being successful doesn't mean your position or title or climbing the corporate ladder. Being successful is being happy where you are at, contributing to others, and feeling joy with what you've done for the day.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is trying to move into a more impactful HR role like business partner or strategy because I am overqualified for many positions. I am building my own LLC for networking and events planning business incorporating church-based project management coordination.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, Commitment, Honesty, and empathy.
