Zazy Ivonne Lopez is a bilingual civil rights attorney and advocate with a deep commitment to social justice, institutional reform, and innovative problem-solving. A native of the South Bronx, she brings grit, strategic insight, and a solutions-oriented approach to her work, helping both individuals and institutions navigate complex challenges. With 18 years of investigative experience, including over eight years leading large-scale pattern or practice investigations of state and local law enforcement and correctional institutions, Zazy has become a recognized expert in civil rights, compliance, and accountability.

Throughout her career, Zazy has held leadership roles at the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, where she directed investigative teams, implemented policy reform initiatives, and advised senior leadership on operational risk and strategic planning. She has a proven track record of developing and overseeing programs that improve organizational performance, strengthen oversight, and ensure equitable treatment across communities and institutions. Her expertise spans civil rights litigation, institutional reform, risk management, compliance, and organizational development.

In addition to her government service, Zazy is the co-founder of The 1000 Lawyer Project, an initiative advancing diverse voices in the legal profession through bar exam preparation, mentorship, and professional guidance. She is passionate about empowering the next generation of attorneys, creating sustainable programs, and fostering inclusive leadership. Zazy also dedicates time to volunteering, supporting youth and community development initiatives, and advocating for systemic change that strengthens equity, accountability, and opportunity for all.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to always be my best and give my best in everything I do. I’ve also learned the importance of continuing my education and consistently pursuing my goals.

My advice to young women entering this field is to stand tall and proud, embrace your leadership, and always stand up for yourself.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now, one of the biggest opportunities in my field is making sure people know we are here to support them and provide guidance when they need it.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me both professionally and personally are standing up for what I believe in and always doing my best, while also focusing on finding solutions and avoiding unnecessary conflict.
