Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

I wish I could tell you I’m the bold, confident person in the room who isn’t afraid to take opportunities as they come. But the truth is, I’ve always seen myself on the sidelines, quietly admiring people who carry those traits so naturally. There is something undeniably admirable about them.

Recently, I found myself reflecting on my career. That reflection slowly unraveled into memories of college, earlier life experiences, and even childhood. Looking at my life as a whole, it holds both successes and failures—moments of pride alongside moments of regret. However, one recurring theme stands out across the most important and pivotal moments of my life: the times I chose to be courageous and step outside my comfort zone.

Those moments rarely felt empowering at the time. In fact, they more often felt uncomfortable, uncertain, and even embarrassing. Yet each time I took a chance—knowing I might fail and that others would see it—I felt myself grow. Not because everything worked out every time, but because I learned I could handle whatever came next. Over time, confidence followed, and I continue to cultivate it. I wish it came instantly and loudly, but instead, here I am—quietly and slowly building boldness, one opportunity at a time.

Getting out of your comfort zone doesn’t require becoming someone you’re not. It can start small. It can look like raising your hand when you normally wouldn’t, or asking the question you’re afraid might sound obvious. It can also be a big, life-altering move, such as taking on a new leadership role or moving to a new city. These moments compound over time, gradually expanding us into bolder, stronger versions of ourselves.

I know I’m not alone in this. As women, we often carry greater expectations to be seen as capable, consistent, and dependable long before we are encouraged to be bold. We are taught—implicitly and explicitly—to be prepared, to be certain, and to avoid missteps. This conditioning makes sense in the context of history and the roles women were expected to play. However, opportunities to grow bold and courageous in the face of uncertainty rarely arrive at convenient times.

The people shaping the future are not waiting for permission or perfection, nor are they waiting for something to fall into their laps. Instead, they are making thoughtful choices to step forward while still carrying doubt, expectations, and responsibility. That willingness to try, adapt, and learn in real time is what builds confidence—not the absence of fear.

As the new year begins, start taking those chances. Start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable.
