Learning How to Partner Instead of Controlling:

Finding mastery and presence in the saddle: a reflection on leadership, horses, and the art of quiet influence.

Learning How to Partner Instead of Controlling:

I find myself reaching a milestone that has nothing to do with slowing down. I can still ride magnificent thoroughbreds—powerful, sensitive animals that demand presence, trust, and emotional steadiness. When I’m in the saddle, I feel the same clarity and groundedness that guided me through decades of leading complex programs in global finance and insurance.

My career has taken me through high-stakes environments where the margin for error was thin and the pressure was constant. I’ve led multi-site regulatory initiatives, guided cross-functional teams across continents, and helped organizations navigate transformation with precision and calm. Those experiences shaped my leadership—but horses refined it.

Horses mirror their riders. They respond to intention, energy, and truth. They don’t follow titles or résumés; they follow presence. And at this stage of my life, I’m proud that a thousand-pound thoroughbred still trusts my steadiness, my intuition, and my ability to guide without force.

Riding isn’t about holding on to the past. It’s about being in the present moment. It’s about honoring the strength, wisdom, and emotional intelligence that have carried me through every chapter of my life. It’s a reminder that mastery deepens with time, that influence can be quiet and powerful, and that leadership—real leadership—is something you embody, not something you announce.
