Midlife and Money: Why Women in Their 40s Are Taking Back Control

Let’s be real your 40s can feel like a financial pressure cooker.

You’re working hard, maybe even thriving in your career, but between rising living costs, college tuitions, aging parents, divorce recovery, or starting over completely, it’s easy to feel like your money is never fully “together.” And the truth is, for a lot of us, it isn’t.

A recent survey showed that more than half of women in their 40s are providing care for both their children and their parents. And while we’re showing up for everyone else, our own financial needs often end up last on the list. We don’t talk about it enough but many women in midlife feel behind, burned out, and unsure of what comes next.

But here’s the thing: you’re not too late. You’re right on time.

This is actually the perfect season to shift gears, redefine your money story, and finally build the kind of financial foundation that supports the woman you are now, not the girl you used to be.

Here are a few places to start:

1. Stop playing small. Ask for more.

Whether it’s a raise at work, better service from your bank, or clearer money boundaries in your relationships, it’s time to stop settling. The financial world wasn’t built with women in mind, which means we often weren’t taught to advocate for ourselves. But now you know better. And knowing better means doing better.

So ask the questions. Negotiate the contract. Request the promotion. Walk into that bank and say, “Help me understand this.” You are not too emotional, too late, or too much. You are simply claiming your space.

2. Start saving: even if it’s small.

Waiting until you “make more” is a trap. Life won’t magically get cheaper next month. What you need is rhythm, not perfection.

Set up an automatic transfer even $25 a week into a separate savings account. Label it something that excites you: “Peace Fund,” “Freedom Jar,” “Future Me.” When you treat savings like a non-negotiable, you stop waiting for someday and start preparing for your next level—today.

3. Get help: don’t do this alone.

So many women carry silent shame around money. We think we “should” already know what to do. We’re embarrassed by debt, unsure about credit scores, and overwhelmed by the idea of investing.

Let me tell you something: shame has no place in your financial future. The truth is, money is a skill and like any skill, it can be learned at any age. Find a guide, take a course, ask a friend who knows what she’s doing. You don’t have to fix it all overnight, but you do have to start.

That’s exactly why I created the 7-Day Financial Alignment Challenge—to help women just like you reconnect with your money, clear the noise, and take powerful, simple steps toward freedom. It’s not about perfection. It’s about alignment.

4. Set boundaries with your wallet.

This one is big.

If you’re constantly bailing people out, picking up the bill, loaning money to friends or family, or overspending to keep up appearances you’re not being generous. You’re being depleted.

Money boundaries are love in action. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to prioritize your future. You are allowed to have goals that don’t involve fixing everyone else’s emergencies.

Your money should support your peace, not sabotage it.

5. Make a plan, not just a wish.

Do you want to buy a home? Travel more? Quit your job in five years? Retire by 60?

Whatever your goals are, wishing won’t get you there. You need a plan.

A budget is not a punishment it’s a blueprint. A clear path to what you really want. Start tracking where your money is going. Look at your subscriptions, your spending habits, your income. When you know the truth, you can make powerful changes. And those changes add up fast.

Here’s the bottom line:

Your 40s aren’t a crisis they’re a comeback.

You’re not starting over. You’re starting smarter.

You’ve lived enough life to know what matters. You’ve survived enough loss to know what you need. And now, it’s time to take back control not just of your money, but of your vision, your voice, and your future.

And if you need help? I’ve got you. Join my 7-Day Financial Alignment Challenge—it’s free, and it’s designed to help you reconnect with your goals, understand your money, and finally feel empowered about your finances again.

Let’s stop surviving and start building.

Because you? You were never meant to settle.
