A Call to Action: Lifting the Veil on Silent Tragedies

A Call to Action: Lifting the Veil on Silent Tragedies

By: Chaplain Jackie A. Segal

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to speak for those whose voices have been silenced. For Chaplain Jackie A. Segal, this is more than awareness. It is a mission born of experience. A survivor turned advocate, she now calls on all of us to confront the hidden crisis of domestic abuse  and to stand for those still living in fear.

The Crisis We Cannot Ignore

Every day, more than three women in the United States are killed by an intimate partner. Countless others live in silence, afraid to seek help. Victims of domestic violence are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide. Many are mothers who stay quiet to protect their children, trapped by fear of losing them.

Behind these statistics are faces, families, and stories that often end too soon. This is not just a social issue. It is a moral and spiritual crisis that demands our response.

Faith in Action

Scripture reminds us that God calls us to defend the oppressed and speak for the voiceless:

“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression.” — Isaiah 1:17

“Speak out for those who cannot speak.” — Proverbs 31:8-9

Our faith cannot stay silent. We must act with justice, compassion, and courage for those who suffer.

A Survivor’s Call

“I stand not only as a Chaplain but as a survivor,” Jackie writes. “I know what fear feels like  and I know what freedom looks like. Abuse steals lives, but faith and community restore them.”

She reminds us that the cycle of abuse is not inevitable. It can end with awareness, education, and love that empowers.

What We Can Do

  1. Be a Voice of Refuge. If you suspect abuse, reach out and connect victims to help.
  2. Support the Work. Donate to shelters and advocacy programs that protect women and children.
  3. Break the Cycle. Model and teach healthy, respectful relationships in your home and community.

At Influential Women, we echo Chaplain Jackie’s message: awareness must lead to action. Every survivor deserves safety, healing, and dignity.

Let us be the voice that breaks the silence, the hands that help, and the hearts that heal.
