A Mother’s View of a Struggle Too Many Face
Honoring Keyy's Legacy: A Foundation Built on Love, Resilience, and the Quiet Battles of Diabetes.
There are parts of a person’s story that the world never sees. With my daughter Keyy, most people saw her smile first because it was bright, warm, and always ready to lift someone else up. What they didn’t see were the quiet battles she fought every day just to manage her diabetes.
There were times she lost her glucometer and couldn’t afford to replace it right away. There were times when she reused insulin needles or kept pen tips longer than she should have, stretching what she had because life didn’t always give her the resources she needed. She never complained. She never wanted anyone to worry. She carried her struggles privately, the way so many people do.
As her mother, I learned to read the signs. I kept extra supplies—syringes, snacks, pen tips, whatever I could gather—because I never wanted her to go without. I would step in quietly, filling the gaps the system left behind. But even with all the love and support in the world, she still faced moments when she had to make impossible choices just to get through the day.
And yet, through all of it, she remained positive. Resilient. Giving. She helped others even when she was hurting. She showed up for people even when she was struggling herself. That was who she was—a young woman with a heart bigger than her circumstances.
Her story is not just about the challenges she faced. It’s about the strength she carried, the love she gave, and the reality that too many people living with diabetes still face today. No one should have to reuse supplies. No one should have to hide their needs. No one should have to fight alone.
The Keyy Foundation exists because of her—to honor her, to protect others, and to make sure no one else has to navigate their journey in silence. When God called her home, He also placed something in my heart: a mission I didn’t ask for, but one I now carry with everything in me, whether others believe or not.
The Keyy Foundation was born from her journey, her resilience, and her quiet suffering. It exists so others won’t have to walk the same path alone. It exists to bring dignity, access, and compassion to people who are fighting battles the world doesn’t typically see.
Her life gave this mission its heartbeat. Her struggle gave it purpose. And her legacy gives it strength.
Through this foundation, I pray her story will help others find hope, support, and the resources they deserve. I continue to ask for donations because too many people are still reusing supplies, hiding their struggles, and going without the basics. Your support helps ensure no one has to fight their diabetes alone.
