A Pot of Stew and a Lesson in Preparing for the Future

It started with a simple question from my husband:

“Do we have ground beef?”

I opened the freezer expecting to find exactly that. Instead, I found New York strip steaks, steak strips, steak cubes, and stew meat.

What struck me wasn’t the variety—it was the reminder that these were choices we had made over time. High-quality purchases stored intentionally for future needs.

Then I looked around the kitchen.

We had banana peppers from our garden, roasted peppers, one red pepper sitting on the counter that needed attention, and a red onion in the refrigerator that had somehow lasted longer than expected.

So we did what generations before us did: we made something with what we already had.

The stew turned out delicious.

But what stayed with me wasn’t dinner—it was the lesson.

Garden Produce Doesn’t Wait

There’s something about growing your own food that reminds you of reality. Garden produce doesn’t wait. It isn’t engineered for shelf life. If you don’t use it, you lose it.

The same can be true of opportunities.

Recently, our family experienced a reminder of that. Rain interrupted work schedules, and income became less predictable. It highlighted something I think many people are facing right now: stability can change quickly.

Preparation Doesn’t Always Mean Stockpiling

Preparation doesn’t always mean stockpiling. Sometimes, it means building flexibility.

• Learning a skill
• Creating a second source of income
• Developing relationships
• Finding ways to create value outside of one path

For younger generations especially, I think one of the greatest gifts we can offer isn’t just encouragement—it’s helping them think ahead. Not from fear, but from confidence and capability.

That pot of stew became more than a meal.

It became a reminder that stewardship is using what you have today while preparing wisely for tomorrow.
