A Smaller Generation, A Greater Responsibility: Preparing the Next Generation for an AI-Driven World
Throughout my career-from semiconductor technology and business ownership to manufacturing leadership and mentoring entrepreneurs through SCORE-I have learned that every major technological advancement creates both opportunity and responsibility.
Today, we are living through another one.
Artificial Intelligence is accelerating at an incredible pace. Data centers are expanding, manufacturing is returning, infrastructure investments are growing, and entirely new industries are emerging. Yet behind every technological advancement is something much more important: people.
Technology cannot build itself. It cannot maintain itself. It cannot lead, teach, care for others, or strengthen our communities without a prepared workforce.
That realization became the foundation for my book, A Smaller Generation, A Greater Responsibility.
The book explores the convergence of AI, workforce readiness, education, infrastructure, and demographics. While much of the conversation surrounding AI focuses on what technology can do, I wanted to focus on a different question:
Who will be prepared to build, support, and sustain the future we are creating?
As a SCORE mentor, I work with entrepreneurs every week. Increasingly, they arrive with AI-generated business plans, marketing ideas, and financial projections. What they often need most isn't more information-they need guidance, judgment, and the confidence to execute.
Access to information does not always equal readiness.
That lesson extends far beyond entrepreneurship. It applies equally to our schools, colleges, workforce programs, and communities. Preparing the next generation requires more than teaching technology. It means helping students understand where opportunities are growing-in skilled trades, healthcare, hospitality, advanced manufacturing, technology infrastructure, engineering, and countless careers that will continue to rely on human capability.
My hope is that this conversation encourages collaboration among educators, business leaders, workforce organizations, and community partners. Together, we can help students see not only the challenges ahead but also the tremendous opportunities available to them.
The future is not something that simply happens to us.
It is something we prepare for.
