Alyssa Duff didn't set out to build another marketplace. She set out to solve a quieter, more structural problem: the local food economy has supply and demand, but it lacks the neutral infrastructure to connect them reliably.

Duff brings 16 years of frontline kitchen and operations experience to the work. That background gave her an intimate understanding of procurement friction, but the company she founded is deliberately not a restaurant-first tool. It is designed as a neutral coordination layer that can serve multiple sides of the regional food system.
The Solution: A Coordination Operating System
INDYpendent Bytes functions as regional food-systems coordination infrastructure. Participants enter through structured intake, are classified by capacity and readiness, complete training or competency checks where needed, and participate in recurring operating cycles.
Buyers communicate demand or budgets. Cultivators submit availability or production capacity. The platform coordinates matching, allocation rules, confirmations, logistics visibility, documentation, and impact reporting.
The company is rolling out specialized operating systems in sequence:
- N-OS (Nonprofit / Food-Access) - Launch priority. Best first channel for large orders, surplus absorption, budget testing, and social-impact proof.
- R-OS (Restaurants / Chefs) - Second. Validates specialty SKUs, timing windows, claim windows, and fair allocation complexity.
- I-OS (Institutions)- Third. Validates higher compliance, certifications, cold-chain requirements, and larger procurement cycles.
Supporting this core infrastructure are additional products:
- A Resource Discovery Agent that helps users navigate business, employment, land, food-access, training, funding, and community resources.
- The IB Learning Academy, offering cultivator training, food-safety education, business-readiness instruction, and buyer training.
- Data and decision-support tools that surface production capacity, demand patterns, resource gaps, and ownership opportunities.
"We're not a marketplace or a distributor," Duff emphasizes. "We're the coordination layer that organizes fragmented supply into reliable channels."
Early Traction and Pilot Focus
INDYpendent Bytes remains early-stage and pre-revenue. The company is currently bootstrapped and founder-funded, working with university software teams from the University of Texas at Dallas and Arizona State University on prototypes and the first operational workflows.
Early activity includes land-host intake submissions, conversations with prospective nonprofit and institutional buyers, engagement with cultivators, and development of training and operating-system specifications. A controlled N-OS pilot is the near-term priority: recruit and intake cultivators and land hosts in Indianapolis, secure at least one committed nonprofit or food-access partner, and test intake, readiness, demand matching, weekly cycles, logistics coordination, and feedback loops.
"We're focusing on proving the model with nonprofit and food-access partners first," Duff says. "Once we have clean operating data and reliable processes, we can responsibly expand to restaurants and institutions."
Revenue and Sustainability
The long-term model combines several streams:
- Coordination fees for procurement, logistics, data management, reporting, and network operations
- Training, onboarding, and readiness services
- Contracts with institutions, nonprofits, government-adjacent programs, and community partners
- Grants and sponsorships tied to food access, entrepreneurship, workforce barriers, community wealth, and regional resilience
- Future mechanisms such as a Root Cellar Reserve to help smooth restaurant seasonality
The approach prioritizes mission-aligned and non-dilutive capital in the near term while building toward sustainable earned revenue.
Why This Matters Now
Central Indiana has meaningful farm density, a strong independent restaurant and institutional landscape, and growing interest in local food. What it has lacked is shared infrastructure that can serve multiple buyer types without forcing producers or buyers into rigid, single-purpose channels.
By starting with nonprofit and food-access demand, INDYpendent Bytes aims to create volume, absorb surplus, generate social-impact data, and refine operating rules before layering on more complex commercial channels. The result, if successful, is a more resilient regional food system: cultivators with predictable outlets, buyers with reliable local supply, reduced waste, and new pathways into ownership and economic participation.
"I'm not trying to disrupt the entire food system overnight," Duff says. "I'm trying to build the missing coordination layer so that the people already doing the hard work can do it more effectively. If we can prove that works in Indianapolis, the model can travel."
