Building Strategic Partnerships: Influence Is Built, Not Bestowed

For years, I watched talented professionals do meaningful work but struggle to be seen as strategic.

They were trusted to execute, counted on to support, and valued for getting things done. Yet they were not always invited into the conversations where direction was shaped, priorities were clarified, and decisions were made early enough to influence the outcome.

For more than 20 years, I had the opportunity to work within organizations as a talent and organizational development leader—partnering with executives, managers, emerging leaders, employees, HR teams, and cross-functional partners who were all trying to solve real business and people challenges.

Through that work, I learned something that continues to shape the way I lead, coach, and serve clients today: being seen as strategic is not about having the biggest title in the room. It is about how you show up, the questions you ask, the trust you build, the recommendations you offer, and the results you help create.

That belief became the foundation for my chapter in Talent Impact: Grow Your People, Grow Your Business, titled "BUILDing Bridges: From Talent Leader to Strategic Business Partner." It also became the foundation for a framework I now use with leaders, teams, and organizations: the BUILD Strategic Partner Framework.

While I originally developed the framework through the lens of talent development and HR leadership, its principles extend far beyond a single function. Whether you are leading a team, coaching others, running a business, or working to increase your influence, BUILD offers a practical framework for strengthening your credibility and impact.

Credibility Begins with Expertise

Credibility begins with expertise, but expertise is more than simply knowing things. It is about continuing to grow, staying curious, and making your knowledge useful to others.

One question I often ask leaders is:

"What do people currently come to you for, and what do you want to be known for?"

The more clearly you understand and communicate your value, the more likely others are to seek your perspective when it matters most.

Understand What Is Really Needed

Strategic partnership also requires understanding the bigger picture.

Early in my career, I thought being helpful meant responding quickly with a solution. Over time, I learned that strategic partners pause long enough to understand what is really needed.

Sometimes the request is for training, but the real issue is unclear expectations.

Sometimes the request is for coaching, but the real issue is accountability.

Better questions help us move from completing tasks to creating better solutions.

Influence from Anywhere

Influence is another essential part of the bridge.

Some of the most influential people in an organization are not always the loudest voices or the highest-ranking leaders. They are the people who build trust, listen well, understand what matters to others, and offer perspectives that help move work forward.

Influence grows through relationships, credibility, and intentional communication—often long before a formal decision or invitation ever arrives.

Lead Strategically

One of the simplest ways to lead more strategically is to move from observation to recommendation.

I often coach others to use a simple structure:

"Here's what I'm seeing. Here's why it matters. Here's what I recommend."

That shift changes the conversation. It helps others see not only that you recognize an issue, but also that you can connect it to business impact and offer a thoughtful path forward.

Deliver Results

Finally, credibility grows when people see progress.

Strategic partners do not wait until everything is perfect before communicating momentum. They identify quick wins, follow through on commitments, share what they've learned, and help others recognize the progress being made.

Results do not always have to be large to matter. Sometimes the most meaningful result is greater clarity, stronger alignment, renewed trust, or one important next step.

That Is What It Means to BUILD

When I think about the leaders and professionals I have been honored to coach and work alongside, the ones who grow their influence are not always those who started with the most authority.

They are the ones who keep learning, understand the bigger picture, build relationships intentionally, connect their work to what matters most, and consistently deliver results that create momentum.

That is what it means to BUILD.
