By all appearances, success often looks effortless. Degrees line the wall, professional credentials follow a name, and years of experience create the impression of certainty. What those accomplishments rarely reveal are the countless mornings when success begins with a simple decision: to get out of bed and try again.
For Licensed Bilingual Educational Diagnostician Shannan Casey, perseverance has never been a motivational slogan. It has been a way of life.
Long before she found her calling in special education
Long before she found her calling in special education, Casey envisioned a very different future. She began studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas while interning at the Mexican Consulate, where she hoped to one day become an ambassador. Languages fascinated her. They came naturally, opening doors to cultures, conversations, and possibilities she believed would define her career.
Life, however, had other plans.
Becoming a single mother changed everything. The dream of international diplomacy gave way to a much more immediate mission: building a stable life for her family. Rather than mourning the path she had lost, Casey embraced the one unfolding before her. She earned her alternative teaching certification and entered the classroom as a bilingual educator, determined to make a difference in the lives of children while providing for her own.
Over the next twenty years, she taught multilingual students, many with disabilities, discovering that education offered something diplomacy never could: the opportunity to change lives one child at a time.

As the mother of three very different children, Casey came to understand that there is no single definition of success. Her oldest son grew into a courageous, athletic, and resilient young man whose determination inspired everyone around him. Her daughter is gifted and talented, overflowing with creativity, curiosity, and artistic ability. Her youngest son was born with a congenital heart defect that ultimately resulted in an intellectual disability. Through him, she learned perseverance, patience, advocacy, and unconditional love in ways no university course could ever teach.
Watching each of her children learn differently transformed not only the way she parented but also the way she educated. She became increasingly aware that many multilingual students were being misunderstood. Some were identified as having disabilities simply because they were learning English, while others with genuine disabilities went unnoticed because language acquisition masked their needs.
Those questions led Casey beyond the classroom

She pursued a master's degree in Special Education, becoming fascinated by the clinical side of education—the relationship between cognition, language, neurological development, and learning. When her youngest son's medical and educational journey unfolded, her professional interests became deeply personal.
Navigating hospitals, specialists, therapies, evaluations, ARD meetings, and educational planning gave her firsthand insight into the questions and fears families face every day. She wasn't simply evaluating children anymore. She had become one of the parents sitting on the other side of the table.
Instead of allowing those experiences to define her limitations, Casey allowed them to redefine her purpose.
She became a Licensed Bilingual Educational Diagnostician, dedicating her career to ensuring multilingual students receive culturally and linguistically responsive evaluations that distinguish language differences from disabilities. Her work blends science, compassion, advocacy, and cultural understanding to help children receive the support they truly need.

Like many educators, Casey has discovered that meaningful work is not always rewarded with financial security. Despite advanced degrees, specialized licensure, and decades of experience, there have been seasons when paying the bills required as much determination as earning the credentials hanging on her wall. She understands what it feels like to work tirelessly in a profession she loves while still wondering how everything will come together financially.
Yet every morning, she gets up anyway.
She chooses hope over discouragement.
She chooses purpose over frustration.
She chooses gratitude over self-pity.
She continues advocating for children because she believes their futures are worth every ounce of effort.
Every sunrise is a new beginning.
Yesterday's disappointments do not determine today's possibilities. Every evaluation is another opportunity to change a child's future. Every family meeting is another chance to bring clarity during uncertainty. Every report written with care represents another child who will hopefully be understood rather than overlooked.
That philosophy has become the foundation of both her professional and personal life.
Casey believes resilience is rarely built in dramatic moments. Instead, it is forged through ordinary acts of courage repeated every day: continuing to learn, choosing integrity when no one is watching, extending compassion even when life feels overwhelming, and refusing to let circumstances define one's future.

Today, Casey continues advocating for equitable educational practices and culturally responsive bilingual assessments while raising her family with the same values that guide her profession: resilience, curiosity, compassion, and hope.
She believes every child deserves to be seen for who they are, not simply how they score on a test.
She believes every family deserves someone who will listen.
And she believes every morning offers a choice.
Success is not measured by a flawless career, financial abundance, or a life free from hardship. Success is measured by the courage to begin again—to keep learning, keep serving, keep believing, and keep showing up.
