Finding the Light Even When Things Look Dark.
Overcoming Life's Challenges: A Journey of Faith, Resilience, and Dreams
Hi, my name is Jacqui Sawyer. I’m a 44-year-old woman living in Aylett, Virginia. I was born with spina bifida, a birth defect of the spinal cord that can affect each person differently—physically, mentally, and even emotionally—depending on where the defect is located on the spine. What is not often discussed is how it can also impact people emotionally in unique ways.
I consider myself lucky. While I cannot walk, I can still speak—unlike some with this condition who need devices to help them communicate. I am not writing this to gain sympathy—quite the opposite. I want to share that no matter how tough life gets, I keep pushing through challenges and chasing my dreams.
I have had around 33 surgeries, many of them life-threatening. Nearly three years ago, I became critically ill and was told by doctors that I would not survive. I had two severe infections at once, and due to the curvature of my spine, the medication could not reach one of them. But with strong faith, determination, and many prayers, I pulled through after a long recovery.
Even during that time, I completed one of my novels, Behind the Wall by Ginger Bloomfield, which earned a five-star rating. I am also the author of Crown Beneath the Dust by Ginger Bloomfield, which also received a five-star rating. Since then, I have written several other works.
I share this to encourage others: when life seems darkest, there is still hope. Do not give up. I am following my calling. Are you following yours?
