From Boardrooms to Bedtime Stories
How a working mom created personalized stories to help children navigate life's biggest moments.
I've spent nearly a decade at Dow Jones building a career around communication, leadership, and helping people navigate complicated challenges.
I've led teams, managed difficult conversations, presented to executives, and learned how to find the right words in high-pressure situations. But nothing in my professional life prepared me for having to tell my daughter that our cat, Moo, had died.
How do you explain death to a child? How do you tell someone you love more than anything that someone they love won't be there when they get home? How do you find words that are honest, gentle, and comforting when your own heart is breaking, too?
I remember wanting so desperately to make it easier for her. To somehow protect her from the sadness while also helping her understand what had happened.
And I realized something: sometimes the hardest conversations we have aren't in boardrooms. They're with the little people waiting for us at home.
The Conversations Nobody Prepares Us For
I'm a mom of three, ages eight, two, and one. I'm also a sales leader, a wife, and someone who genuinely loves her career.
My days are often a beautiful collision of conference calls, school schedules, business trips, toddler meltdowns, and bedtime routines.
I love the example I'm setting for my children by pursuing my ambitions. I want them to grow up knowing they can build meaningful careers, chase big dreams, and create lives they're proud of. But motherhood has a way of reminding me that no amount of professional experience gives you all the answers.
Sometimes it's grief, like losing Moo. Sometimes it's separation anxiety when Mommy has to leave for another business trip. Sometimes it's navigating friendships, welcoming a new sibling, or trying to understand feelings that seem far too big for such a little person. And sometimes it's simply looking into your child's eyes and realizing that they need an explanation you haven't quite figured out how to give.
As parents, we want to make everything better, but we can't always fix what hurts. What we can do is help our children feel understood, supported, and loved as they navigate it.
What If We Could Tell Them a Story?
I've always believed in the power of storytelling. Stories have a remarkable ability to make complicated things feel understandable. They give us characters to relate to, adventures to learn from, and a little distance from feelings that might otherwise be overwhelming.
I started thinking about how powerful that could be for our children. What if, when a child loses a beloved pet, we could create a gentle story about love, memories, and the special place someone holds in our hearts even after they're gone? What if a little girl struggling with separation anxiety could become the hero of an adventure that reminds her Mommy always comes back? What if a child feeling overshadowed by a new baby could discover, through a magical story, that love only grows?
What if we could turn the moments our children are experiencing into stories that help us start the conversations we sometimes struggle to have?
That's the idea behind Stories from the Stars.
I created a personalized storytelling platform where parents and caregivers can share a little about their child, their interests, and the moment they're navigating.
The platform then creates a magical, illustrated story starring their child, tailored to their age and experiences. Not to replace the difficult conversations, but to help us have them.
Because sometimes children need more than an explanation; sometimes they need a story.
For the Moms Who Are Doing It All
If there's one thing I've learned from being both a mother and a leader, it's that the idea of perfect work-life balance is just that: an idea.
Some days, I'm fully immersed in my career. Other days, my children need every ounce of my attention. And most days, I'm doing my best to move between those two worlds with intention, patience, and probably a little too much coffee.
I don't believe loving your career makes you any less devoted to your children. I don't believe being a wonderful mother means you have to stop chasing your ambitions. But I do believe we need to give ourselves permission to find new ways to connect that fit into our busy schedules.
That's what I hope Stories from the Stars can offer. A little help when the words don't come easily. A meaningful moment together after a long day. A way to turn an ordinary afternoon, a difficult morning, or a challenging bedtime into something that brings us closer. Not another screen to scroll, but a story to sit down and read together.
And while technology helps create the stories, the magic happens in the moments between a parent and child.
A Little Magic, From One Mama to Another
I built Stories from the Stars because I know what it's like to love your children fiercely and still not always know exactly what to say.
I know what it's like to walk into a difficult professional conversation feeling completely prepared, only to come home and find myself searching for the right words with my own daughter. And I know I'm not the only one.
So, to the working moms, the stay-at-home moms, the single moms, the grandmothers, and every caregiver doing their best to raise little humans with big feelings, I'd love to share something with you.
Your first personalized story is on me.
Visit StoriesFromTheStars and create a free magical story inspired by something your child is experiencing. Maybe it's a big life change or a little fear. Maybe it's a moment worth celebrating, or maybe, like me, you're simply searching for a way to help your child understand something that even adults struggle to explain.
I can't promise a story will make the hard moments disappear, but I hope it can help you find the words, open the conversation, and remind your child that whatever they're going through, they don't have to go through it alone. Because at the end of the day, our children don't need us to have all the answers; they need to know we're right there beside them, figuring it out together.
