From Survival to Significance: Reclaiming My Life

From Survival to Legacy

Survival mode became my normal. As a teenage mother, I learned responsibility before I had the opportunity to fully experience youth. I faced challenges that many people never see, including domestic violence, financial hardship, instability, and the constant pressure of carrying responsibilities that often felt larger than myself. Every obstacle seemed to arrive before I had recovered from the last one.

For years, I operated on instinct. I did whatever was necessary to keep moving forward, protect my family, and make it through another day. There wasn't much time to dream about the future when I was focused on surviving the present.

Then life delivered one of the greatest losses a parent can experience—the loss of my son.

The death of my 20-year-old son changed me forever. Grief became a companion I never asked for. There were moments when the pain felt unbearable and the weight of that loss threatened to consume every part of who I was. Losing a child is not something a person "gets over." It becomes part of your story, part of your heart, and part of the person you become.

Yet somewhere within that grief, I discovered something powerful: I still had a choice.

I could allow my circumstances to define me, or I could allow them to refine me.

Little by little, I began choosing healing over hopelessness. I pursued education when it would have been easier to quit. I invested in personal growth when I had every reason to give up. I challenged the limiting beliefs that told me my past determined my future.

I learned that resilience is not about never falling. It is about rising every time life knocks you down.

As I rebuilt myself, I found purpose in helping others. My professional journey led me into behavioral health, case management, housing services, and community support. I found meaning in walking alongside individuals facing some of life's most difficult challenges because I understood what it felt like to struggle, to grieve, and to start over.

What once felt like my greatest burdens became the foundation of my greatest strengths.

Today, I am not defined by trauma, loss, or hardship. I am defined by perseverance, compassion, leadership, and purpose. My experiences inspired my vision for Legacy Footprints Project, an organization dedicated to empowering women, supporting those impacted by incarceration, homelessness, grief, substance use, and systemic barriers, and helping people believe that their story is not over.

My journey has taught me that survival is not the destination.

Survival is the beginning.

The goal is healing. The goal is growth. The goal is building something meaningful from what tried to break you.

Every setback I endured taught me strength. Every loss taught me gratitude. Every challenge taught me resilience. And every victory, no matter how small, reminded me that I was capable of creating a life bigger than my circumstances.

Today, I stand not as a victim of my past, but as a woman committed to creating a legacy.

A legacy of hope.

A legacy of service.

A legacy of resilience.

A legacy that proves that no matter how many times life knocks you down, you can rise again—and when you do, you can help others rise with you.
