From the Classroom to Medicare: Discovering That My Purpose Never Changed

For 32 years, I taught young children with special needs. My greatest joy wasn’t simply teaching—it was helping families understand, gain confidence, and believe they could overcome challenges.

When I retired from education, I discovered another group of people who needed someone willing to slow down and explain complicated topics in simple language: adults trying to understand Medicare.

Recently, during my second Medicare Made Simple workshop at my local library, I met several individuals who had been on Medicare for years yet admitted they didn’t truly understand their coverage.

One woman had lost her insurance card. Another family had both Medicare and Medicaid but didn’t understand how the programs worked together. They weren’t looking for a sales pitch—they were looking for someone they could trust to explain.

In that moment, I realized I hadn’t left teaching behind. My students had simply changed.

Influence isn’t always found on a stage or in a boardroom. Sometimes, it is sitting across from one person, answering one question, listening carefully, and helping someone feel less overwhelmed than they did an hour earlier.

As women, we often underestimate the value of our life experiences. Every lesson we’ve learned, every challenge we’ve overcome, and every person we’ve served prepares us to help someone else.

Today, my mission is simple: to educate, empower, and serve.

If I can help one person understand their Medicare benefits, avoid unnecessary expenses, or gain peace of mind, then I know I’m still doing what I have always loved—teaching.

Our titles may change throughout life, but our purpose often remains the same.
